type='text'>They are not real

Thinking of pronouns as receptacles. Characters as containers. To be filled with what it is I am thinking about. Immense and limitless when pronouns. Concise and finite when characters.

There's a freedom when I stop thinking of pronouns as people. Any sort of notion of reality is supplied by the reader. Language need not be concerned with reality--readers take care of that--only surfaces, ornamentation, acrobatics, vehicularizing across the page all the stuff that gathers within.

They took a bath today. Little water, the leftovers from washing the clothes. They let what they had been hiding roll forth across each other's senses, like marbles spilled from an untied bag, like hardwood floors was the sound of vulnerability in their ears. They were naked, and soft--loving and aware. They were illogical, wet, bird-like, whimsy plastered upon a window, curtains' sole purpose to ornament. They were never told that we start with a floor, then move through space, and end with a ceiling. Not today they weren't, and many more days piled up in the folds of their skin. They washed the dishes with the very little water that was left. Held out buckets towards each other; took buckets in return. They were yellow, limp, and descending into garbage piles, if only to dispel the notion of garbage.

Quick Essay on Chicago Artist Identity

read this.

do people living in other cities feel the same way?
Is this just some bullshit angle, a spin on artists' identity aimed for recognition, uniqueness? Buy this art because it is not aware that it is a product
Process over product is something that I identify with, and in fact, feel proud/energized to know other chicagoans perceive their actions in the same way. But it seems contradictory, in a bad way, to end this type of sentiment, found in the essay, with an encouragement to buy the very art that claims it doesn't care whether it is bought or not.
But still, the artists efforts seem awesome, and this is just the way the essay's writer has spun them.

BLACK LODGE PRESS FUNDRAISER

Last night was real reality played on a 45, over and over. We threw a party at Plan B on Avenue B in NYC and even though the windchill factor was -10 and the night was a Monday, we had an enormous turn out. Thank you all who came and supported us - we hit our goal and will be getting Jamba Dunn's Fossil 23 out in the next few months!!

This is how it all happens.

She is nervous about transfering to the Blue Line and making her way to Ohare. She is flying back to Brooklyn tonight - the quarterly Black Lodge Press meeting we had this weekend is over. The whole world is sad, and we are separated once again. Separated, yes, but Re-energized and back on the same page. Fans and newcomers alike, Get Ready. Seriously, we are serious. A well of energy has sprung up in our collective living room, and there will be books - little ones, big ones, poetic kinds, and prose cadillac paragraphs to ride around in in this cold, cold, mixed-up world. Books for you to buy, right here, on this blog.

Jefferson Navicky's long-awaited prose-poem, Map of the Second Person, will be available on Wednesday, November 15th. There are few writers of Jefferson's caliber - none so honest in the ability to infuse image with emotion. Check out his ebook, The Gatherer at www.pulpbits.com.

Keep tuning in to Black Lodge Blog for information on all the new books coming out this Winter and Spring, Upcoming BLP Events in Brooklyn and Chicago, and a whole lot more posting than our lazy asses have been doing.

Emily, you are the best - thanks so much for coming out to Chicago. Ben, give an update on NaNoWriMo - who is Steve Industry and what is he doing with a Red Sox hat?
The Black Lodge appears, and disappears, and there is no safety in not reading this blog.

Ranch Dressing

From James Gibbons' article Beyond Recognitions on Richard Powers' new book The Echo Makers in this month's Bookforum http://www.bookforum.com/gibbons.html :

Narrative, then, is a primal reflex, a mode of action as integral to our species as the sandhill cranes' migratory programming is to theirs. 'Consciousness is a story telling machine,' Powers said, articulating a view bolstered by recent science about the brain, and proposed that narrative is the means we use to bridge the gap between who we are and the memory of what we were -- or might have been, or perhaps weren't quite. And yet telling stories to ourselves is all we can do to make sense of our past...We live, that is, in distorted remembrance of ourselves. He read me a rejection letter he had gotten from a fantasy journal he submitted to last month. The editor told him that his intro dragged, that his plot wasn't supported and that there was no surprise at the end. It made me wonder, where does a story (that by the way I thought nailed a moment so untouched) get published? Where do we put the niceties that create the space between everything that has already been defined, those crystal spaces that don't carry a strong plot or defined characters, but etch a narrative we don't know we've experienced until we read it on the page.

I guess what I'm saying is we need a Black Lodge Journal...stat!

Everything is budding this weekend, Jefferson Navicky's book is so close to being done, so close it hurts.
